Professional drummer, percussion & hybrid-drumming specialist, musical director and touring session player — from orchestras and theatre to stadium pop and rock.
Darren Petersen has firmly established himself as one of South Africa's premier professional drum and percussion specialists. He is currently a musical director and touring session player working between Cape Town and Johannesburg with the country's top commercial artists, and a Roland South Africa Instrument Specialist thanks to his deep passion for music technology and hybrid acoustic-electronic drumming.
Darren started classical percussion and drum kit at the age of 9 at the Beau Soleil Music Centre in Cape Town, while excelling as a child vocalist and actor in touring musicals — including the internationally acclaimed Evita, Carmina Burana with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, and a lead role in the award-winning British touring musical Honk! He won eisteddfods in both vocal and instrumental disciplines and was awarded Beau Soleil's Top Music Student Prize.
He was booked for his first professional gig and theatre shows at 15, joined the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at 16, and secured the drum chair in the South African Youth Jazz Band, touring the country's biggest shows including the Joy of Jazz festival. He went on to major in Jazz Performance at the South African College of Music (UCT), playing in the university's Big Band and ensembles while building a professional session career.
Equally at home in jazz, rock, pop, hip hop, reggae, drum & bass and orchestral settings, Darren has toured Europe and the USA, performed on national TV and radio, and served as resident drummer for StereoType Records. He is a Zildjian artist and a regular clinician on hybrid drumming and drum technology.
